What no ancient poet succeeded in doing – intoning of the deeds of Alexander the Great in an epic – Walter of Châtillon accomplished with his Alexandreis. The work, consisting of ten volumes, which displaced Virgil’s Aeneid from medieval school curricula for a time, can rightly be called a milestone of medieval poetry due to its high linguistic quality and extraordinary complexity.
